Maybe I am late on this, but today I discovered Carob. Consumed since ancient times, Carob is also known as Saint John’s Bread or locust bean. The dried carob fruit is traditionally consumed on Jewish holidays and the juice is taken by Muslims, during the Islamic month of Ramadan. Carob powder is produced from the roasted pods of the locust bean tree. It is similar to cacao powder, however, less sweet. It has a distinct caramel-like, malty taste and can be used as a substitute for cacao. It is a natural antioxidant, rich in calcium and lowers blood cholesterol levels.

It`s the weekend, time to treat yourself with a delicious Carob-Mocca Smoothie.

Ingredients

  • Carob Powder
  • Cacao Powder
  • Coffee Powder
  • Milk
  • Crushed Ice

I added a bit cacao powder for the right sweetness, and coffee powder to give it a nice Mocca note (you can also use cold coffee). I first blended the carob powder with a bit of milk to avoid lumps. Then I added all other ingredients in a mixer with more milk. Balance carob and cacao powder according to your taste and add just a bit of coffee powder or cold coffee. For a dark chocolate topping, I mixed carob powder and a bit of coffee powder with very little milk. You can also add some of the breakfast-crunch I posted earlier and coconut chips.
