The Importance of Following Your Intuition (Even When the World is Telling you Otherwise)

Successful businessmen, entrepreneurs and creatives rave about the importance of listening to your heart. Steve Jobs called it more powerful than intellect, Albert Einstein named it “the sacred gift”. The importance of following your intuition – Even when the world is telling you otherwise.

Your heart knows things your mind can `t explain

We have all experienced it in some way, this vague and yet so strong feeling that nobody knows where it`s coming from, but seems inherent to our inner self. Without any proof or evidence, we just FEEL something is right or wrong! When we were driving through Milan one day, a guy on a scooter knocked on our car window. He was pointing to the back that we had a flat tire. When he offered us help, I felt “Something was wrong”. I expressed my concerns, but nobody was taking my gut feeling serious. A couple of minutes later the guy robbed us, stealing a couple of hundred Euros with his accomplice.

The only real valuable thing is intuition.

(A. Einstein)

How did I know, even though there was no proof or evidence?! Intuition is like a 6th sense, it seems that our heart knows things that our mind simply can`t explain. Successful businessmen, entrepreneurs and investors, swear on their gut feeling when making important decisions. In nature, instinct is the most important skill for survival. – And yet we pay so little attention to this sacred gift.

Intuition can help to prevent dangerous situations or get us back on the right track in life. Unfortunately, the majority of us is ignoring and unlearning this precious skill. In our “rational” society, decisions are analytically elaborated by mind & brain. But how “rational” can those decisions actually be, given the complexity of our world and cognitive limitations of our mind?

“Intuition can help to prevent dangerous situations or get us back on the right track in life.”

The good news is that we can sharpen this 6th sense just like any other skill. Similar to training a muscle, the more we practice to listen to our body cues, the stronger and more accurate these intuitive signs become. It will make you feel more powerful and give you an inherent self-trust, because the most reliable guidance can be found in yourself .

Why do we have to listen to our hearts?” the boy asked. “Because, wherever your heart is, that is where you will find your treasure.” (The Alchemist)

“Why do we have to listen to our hearts?” the boy asked. “Because, wherever your heart is, that is where you will find your treasure.” (Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist). There is certainly some higher spirituality involved, when it comes to intuitive decision making. Intuition is magic, which we don`t necessary have to understand. – For once, it is enough if we let go of our need to control and simply trust in our most sacred gift!
