Germany`s Christmas Market tradition is long steeped. Millions of people flock to the atmospheric Christmas villages each year to enjoy “Glühwein” (hot wine with winterly spices), “Bratwurst”, local arts & crafts – and a very special Christmas spirit. Among world-famous Christmas Markets like Nuremberg and Dresden, the Romantic Christmas Market at Thurn and Taxis Castle in Regensburg is a hidden gem. If I have ever seen the every essence of a romantic Christmas market, I found it here.
Romantic Christmas Market
Every year around Christmas time, the park of Thurn and Taxis is turned into a magical Christmas village, when hundreds of torches, lanterns and candles light up the beautiful estate. The Christmas Market of Thurn & Taxis Castle set against the romantic backdrop is one of the most beautiful in Bavaria – maybe even Germany. In the courtyard, the large Christmas tree the peaceful center of cozy wooden cabins and winterly fireplaces. The smell of regional delights lies in the air and traditional craftsmen show their unique skills: Blacksmiths, candle makers and hatters provide insight into a historical world of German craftsmanship that is rare to find.
Blacksmiths, candle makers and hatters…A historical world of German craftsmanship
Above open fire salmon is smoked, delicious ham and pig are turned on a rotisserie. It feels like a journey back in time! As the clear voice of a Christ Child rings through the darkness of the park, I am thinking to myself, yes, this is how it is supposed to be. -This is the true spirit of a romantic Christmas Market!
