Have you ever tried “Dulce de Leche”? If not, then you definitely should. The caramel-like Nutella of Latin-America is the perfect sweet treat. Combined with fruits and creamy yoghurt, no sweet tongue can resist.
You don`t need much to create your own “Dulce de Leche”, just sugar, milk, vanilla – and a lot of patience. According to the legend, the cook of Argentina`s dictator de Rosas forgot a pot with milk and sugar on the fire – the result was a caramel like crème that is today`s sweet treat for all Latin-Americans.
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 6 cups whole milk
- vanilla bean
- 1 tsp. baking soda
Instructions
Cook the milk, sugar and vanilla in a pod at medium heat. Bring the mixture to boil whilst stirring. Take it from the heat to mix in a teaspoon of baking soda – the milk will foam – and replace to the heat. Let it simmer for about 1-2 hours until the color turns caramel-like and the consistency gets creamy. Don`t forget to stir every once and a while to prevent it from burning.

You can eat Dulce de Leche as a spread with bread or croissants. I was in a summery mood, so I added Greek yoghurt, fruits and a chopped chocolate bar. Try the delicious caramel-like milk spread and you will understand the Latin-American saying
“It belongs to us like Dulce de leche”.
