What is a lunar eclipse & what is special about this one?

Lunar Eclipses can only ocurr during full moon. The earth is going to pass between the sun and the moon and all 3 bodies are in perfect alignment. While we typically experience anywhere between one and four lunar eclipses per year, it is exceptionally rare to have such a long total lunar eclipse (and in July). This lunar eclipse is the longest of the 21st century  because it passes through the center of Earth’s shadow, increasing the time in which the moon is blocked from the sun.

Why does the moon turn orange?

A total eclipse happens when the earth completely blocks direct sunlight from reaching the moon. The only light reflected from the lunar surface has been refracted by earth`s atmosphere & the light appears reddish for the same reason that a sunrise or sunset do. Mars is also at its brightest, putting 2 bright red objects in our sky.

Where can I see it?

The spectacle is visible in the Eastern Hemisphere. Those in Europe, Africa, Asia, and parts of South America will witness either the full eclipse or a partial eclipse. People in the Western Hemisphere, unfortunately, like North America and Greenland are going to miss out on the rare lunar eclipse event, because it happens during daylight.

How long is the spectacle going to take?

The total eclipse is going to last 1 hour 43 minutes, but you can see a partial eclipse for nearly 4 hours. Unlike solar eclipses, it is safe to view without eye protection.
